It was one of those steel-gray days over the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest.

The weather was cold steel too.

Luckily for me, I wasn’t in Bucharest, I was in the U.S. Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica and the weather was in the 80s as I waited in the front row of the hodge-podge of humanity. I put on my glasses to watch CNN – the first English language television I had seen in weeks.

The television was a small screen mounted high on the wall. Seeing the picture was no problem. But reading the crawl lines beneath the pictures, made me realize it was time for new eyeglasses.
