The Four Hours of October That Costa Rica Will Never Have
There are about four hours of October in Kentucky that I miss.
The weather predicted for tomorrow in southwestern Kentucky is sunny with a high in the mid 60s. That means around sunset, it will start to dip into the 50s. By this time of year, I would have filled up the chiminea with sticks and sticks and leaves and branches that I didn’t just go ahead and mow down.
I would fire up a 24 ounce plastic cup with rum or whiskey and coke, fire up the twigs and sticks, fire up a cigar, fire up a long-form journalism print magazine, Esquire, The Atlantic or the New Yorker and enjoy the fall twilight. It lasted about an hour. And there were only about four good hours on the weekends the entire month.
I miss the roaring fire, the print magazines, the cigar.
But I would have to sit as far away from the house as possible (on a 1/4 acre lot front to back) because Nancy hated the smell of cigars.
She would get fired up.
I don’t miss that.
I didn’t know you had lived n the great state of KY. I’m from Cincy and the fall weather combined with the outdoor fire s truly something to fondly remember.
Hi Kim, thanks for commenting. Cincy is a long way from Bowling Green… but we’re a long way from both, right?
